THERMAL WING FACADE

  1. Energy-neutral facade

  2. Simplicity

  3. Make-ability

Bucky Lab, a studio that revolves around innovative design and focusses on the manufacturability. It results in a 1:1 model of the design.

The design is a self-sustaining sun-facade. Sun-radiation is used to heat up wings in the facade. The heat is subtracted from the wings and used to heat up artificial fishline muscles (which are large bulks of nylon thread, that are turned up like a spring). Because of the heat the nylon tends to shrink and therefor the artificial fishline muscles are shortened. This caused a change in the position of the wings, which results in a higher shade-level in the building.

The entire facade is filled with these wings, and because of the technology the wings are able to react on their own. The whole facade will show an organic reaction to the sun. This idea is further explained through simple visuals and drawings.

CORE VALUES

A thermal column is a column with up-rising air in the lower altitude, created by the uneven heating of the surface of the earth. When birds encounter such an event they only need to spread their wings to ascend on the warm winds, conserving their energy. We’ve adapted this idea into our design, the ‘Thermal Wing Facade’.
